Makers disc

After the experiment with the finger prints were successfully i had to think about the other factors of the medal. The mechanics were in motion but I hadn’t yet thought about the marks of a maker. The finger prints represented the identity of the makers, however they’re hard to tell who’s is who’s.  I like the idea that the finger prints represents a person but you can only tell who’s it is by the accompanying mark. A tool mark, texture of a specific material or a signature makes each object that is made individual to its maker. 

I borrowed some tools from some of the makers to test them out in clay. Using some terracotta i cut at 100mm circle with the indent of a smaller circle replicating the size of the real medal. I tested different marks and ways of imprinting them into the clay. 

I tried to test different tools from people who had given me their finger prints to make it was realistic as possible. I got some of them to inprint some of their own tools. For example clio used her scalpel so i could get an accurate representation  of how they would actually use their typology or mark. 

I was going to originally match the finger print with the mark however the disk rotate so they would be moving from person to person. I actually like this idea though that you try and match a person with their ma or that both the marks and finger print opens up the possibility of experimentation  . Gives makers the opportunity to explore in different fields from different oll or different materials and processes.

AS i was experimenting with different marks it occurred to me how little space on the inner disk there is for the marks, where the outer disk had way too much room for the finger prints. I drew so other designs in my sketchbook with them in reverse. SO the finger prints would be on the inner disk and their marks on the outer.   This way the fingerprints would be close together and in interesting positions and there would be alot more room for tools and mark. I could also show a few ways of using the tool anr material. 


Finger prints 

My Bams! Design involved alot of new techniques and process that took time to learn, get inductions for a book equipment. During this process of learning rhino and how 3D printing works i decided to focus on the fingerprints. The first hurdle I came across was how to get clear finger prints. I tried ink from stamps and pens before i thought about going to the paper print studio, where there was non drying black ink… that had dried. Tom topped the roller up with some ink and i was able to get clear prints. I then asked 11 makers to come down to the studio and create some finger prints for me.

I scanned these prints at 600dpi which is the highest the scanners at the uni go. I took this scan down to craig the technical demonstrates in the soft modelling room. He helped me scan and slightly clean up the images. As a tester i laser cut/etched in to an acrylic circle. IT came out very well, it cut a very defined and clear finger print. Hower it was 3 times the size of an actual finger print. For my medal i want to have the prints at a realistic scale. AS they are representing makers i want them to actually look like finger prints. 

The photocopier scan wasn’t at a high enough resolution to cut the finger prints on a realistic scale. SO after a day of running around the whole campus looking for a high resolution. I managed to get the actual prints home where my grandfarther scanned them at 1200dpi. With this new scans i put the best prints on illustrator an laser etched them. They were okay on the correct scale but the lines were to close together. ALthough you can tell they are fingerprints and individual theres not as much detail as i would have liked. 

I went and saw Charlie the tech dem of interior architecture where she helped clean up the prints on illustrator making it clearer for the laser cutter to etch the prints. I also changed the settings on the laser cutter so it would etch deeper and take out any large chunks of black areas emphasising the detail lines of the finger. 

After i was happy with the etching of the finger prints and i had perfected the maquette of the actual madeal, and how it would move. I laser cutt accrylic versions of of the medal in accrycli because it was the easiest and really the only possibvmle way of getting the finger prints on to the medal, where i created a silicone mould.

Maternity started around 1500 – 1700 industrial revolution around the middle of 20th indusrty we realised we were using to kill each other in large numbers. Post madernity 21st century dominate our systems thinking and doing. Ideas are dead. Did split knowledge into compartments cognition, social science, arts, spirituality dropped out of the mix. 

Cognitive was the privileged knowledge of modernity . Reliable knowledge which lead into scientific advancement . Took science applied it technologies. Use of technology then became mass produced . Sell them. Western style capitalism . Consumerism, design close ally of consumerism. Global . Break down trade barriers sport the idea and consumer based growth, under cost material encourages consumption. Polluters don’t pay exploits nature exploits people treats them as units of production. Meaningless sense of .unsustainbale system finite growth . Constant growth in GDP. Growth in material harvesting. Increased in energy use.

Disposable ink cartridges disposable battery go into the water turning on a co2 pump don’t just accept objects they’re at the heart of unsustainbable 

 Small experiments to change how we use objects how we derail weigh those objects .

Differences between modernism and wabi sabi is that it is mainly targeted or open to the private domain where’s my practice as a maker is for everyone primarily the public realm. Im my practice is use a lot of steel or materials made from ores that have been maufatured in to a state I can manipulate. Wabi sabi embodys the spirituality and journey of a natural material. Although we both embody the journey within our practice the core material for me are man made. A similarity between wabi sabi and my practice is the corrosion and contamination makes it expression richer. I interpret this as non pure materials showing even highlighting imperfections that can create individuality texture colour uniqueness. Instead of a pure straight cut piece. I feel this links in perfect immaterialty links in to this as well. I use different materials that link together being impure. I make objects that can be functional but also can also be just for its aesthetic. The majority of my work is for display and cant be used as a functional ever day object . Wabi sabi take on function and utility is that its not a primary value unlike modernism my work similarly is usuall bespoke sculptures that are one ok a kind I do not like the idea of my type of work being mass produced. It looses its standard of handcrafting and doesn’t get the individual care and through throught its making . 

Wabi sabi demonstrates the lack of control over nature and how to work with it and more importantly learn from it or in a way accept it . Nothing finishes nothing is perfect you have no control.

 Eventually everything fades into oblivion or non existence . Everything is imperfect. Everything is incomplete. It’s not negative nor is it positive it’s coming to terms of reality of life,of change . Physical forces and deep structures that underline our everyday world. 

In the west thing  or objects don’t last we re buy it has a function it breaks were now wowed but anything where wabi sabi embodys beauty endurance, its subtly and not in your fave like most western culture it says you need to slow down be patient and look closely which our culture wont or cant do everything is fast paces and constantly moving we are blinded. A lot not it is based on how you perceive thing like what do you consider ugly? Where’s thingis the west are generic standard for many people. It challenges you ideal on whether for example is it beautiful ugly grotesque or homely?

Enduring artefacts. Objects that serve no purpose are not useful objects that don’t tackel sustainable issues in design and manufacturing. Need to destinguish between and general object and object type . Understand sustainable solutions between 

Classification system functional, social or positional, inspiration and spiritual.  
Re design an ordinary object. Functiona to inspirational/ spiritual. 

Cardboard Maquette 

After some thinking and drawings I decided that my medal needed to combine  representation of people as makers and how they communicate, demonstrate or express themselves through their work and that it is theirs. To do this i wanted to have several of the makers that i know and have their finger prints on the medal, to accompany that i wanted their favoured tool mark  or texture. But before i focused on the detail i wanted to sort of the moving aspec of the medal.

I orginally wanted to have several discs inside each other that you would be able to push up creating a sort of funnel shape. The finger prints would be on the top of the discs and the marks inside on the edge to only be seen when the discs were elivated. This proved to be incredibly difficult to even think about moving the disks. As i am no engineer with a limited time for this project I decided to simplify the design. The elevation of the layer really had to direct link to the concept. However 2-3 discs rotating inside each other would. If a disc had the prints and the marks on another, you could rotate them a match different tool to different people, as if they were trying different material or process or showing versititily of medium and their tools. On a more personal level to me makers whether on my course or already work embody craftmens ship they value independent work hand crafter items. They push the boundarys challenge the norms of making pushing then limits and. being innnotive. FOr me this concept is pushing men limits and seriously challenging me but also emphasises the  course im on and my passion making  is how i personally cope in hard suituations, i make objects to give to people to show them i care that ive put effort into some within for them. Making and my own styles and preference are what makes me who i am. I don’t usually do welll in conceptual based projects so to make this hopefully a successful project i need to base it on something that will motivate me. 

TO see if the rotating idea would work i created a cardboard maquette. 

I Started with the idea of 3 discs after some very technical ideas of pins,notches and links that I couldnt comprehend at all.  I decided to go with an idea i could actually understand. This was a horizontal dividing layer in each disc that broke the index of the disc in to an upper and lower chamber/channel. The tabs of the inner discs would slot into a verticals channel that would let it run through either the upper or lower channel. THis maquette was designed for the elevating idea. 

This maquette was very difficult to make in cardboard and took a round 3 hours to make. Drawing is not my strongest skills and i really struggle to communicate my ideas through 2D. This maquette (up till that point) was the most intricate model i had ever made and i was proud.  It showed me that the elivation idea was maybe a little to complex and for that effect wasn’t that impressive nor did it actually have any relevance . I also discovered that if im to have finger prints and marks what would go on the 3rd disc , would i need it ?  The medal could be no more the 100mm diameter so would i have enough room to put the deatails on with 3 discs.

I believe that so is it true?
The earth was believed to be flat cameras and physical evidence proved opur initial beliefes were untrue. We did not have enough knowledge to have the truth.
Art and science makes claims to truth but they both have very different understandings of truth.

Science is valued more than belief in the western world. Art is being removed from the core curriculum.

What we believes in the 17th century is now more refined has changed . Knowledge is spreading out instead of zooming in. On going oprocess can not ever stop. Its interactive always working with the voice (work) of someone else always comparing. 
If I had to invite 4 figures of people from my practice that have influence me I would have a sense of who I would want to bring. Due to my relationship to them or theirs work. Comparison and contrast.

What does a virus look like?

Maquete star map 

My original  idea was based on their movement of the stars within the northern hemisphere this ideas was based on my grandfather being part of a navigation treat in ww2. Their regiment was know and the pleadies or the severn sisters. Or so im told. I am also keen in astronomy so they influenced my design for the medal.

I planned to have a northern constellation map on the inside of one disc and a circular tree line with a small exsposed are on top. As the top disc would rotate a small p[art of the map would be revealed. 

This concept was the perfect opportunity to add the element of movement to my design as it mimics the roation of the earth to view the stars. 

However if feel like this idea doesnt quite cut it. Although the inspiration from my grandfarther means alot to me i dont feel like the design really pushes my skills enough.  Although i am really keen to have a medal that moves. I was speaking to clio about different ideas when she mentioned the lack of craft with in our culture, and how she was trying to get that idea across in her medal. This got me thinking about the different crafts people on the course use and are learning. This lead on to how different every maker is our styles, our use of materials our crafts. I started to think about how individual everyone on the course is and how they demonstrate their individual work. For exampl initials, finger prints even the use of a favourite tool. 

In clay i experimented with some textures or prints to get some initial ideas. My first ide was based on textures of materials we used so i took a print of a knot form a log in the studio. 

The print had amazing texture lots of ridges and crevices that I wouldn’t have been able to hand carve. For one side of a medal i like the imnprint of the log. However i want to reprint a range of makers, and wooden. Is one material that a few makers work with. I felt the imprint of wood does embody makers although i do like the idea of somehow having texture of materials on the medal. 

Instead of focusing on the material i thought in more depth about makers were people, we make marks , we use our hands we use tools. Id seen on the Bams website after finger prints and fist shaped medals, the hand hand cast caught my attention because of a square edge working in comntrast with the closed hand.  Grabbed a ball of clay and d squished in in my hand making sure i really pressed my fingers in to to the clay.  It reminded me of Rachel Whiteread “s work. I didn’t take a cast of my fist like the example on Bams, i took an imprint of the negative space inside my closed hand. 

I like ’tis form and how ithows one of the main tools a maker uses their hands. However im trying to embodys makers and how they make yet this mead would only fit in my hand or someone with smaller hands. I want to creat a medal that prepresents people who make or have a craft and how they create their work. My smallish hand doesnt really do this .
